Guidelines for Posting to the ChefX3D Mailing Lists

This document is based on years of experience with mailing lists, and specifically addresses the problems seen most frequently on those lists. It should not be taken as a complete guide to mailing list etiquette — you can find one of those on the Net pretty easily if you want one.

If you follow these conventions when posting to the chefx3d@xj3d.org mailing lists, your post is much more likely to be read and answered.

Where to post:

Post to chefx3d@xj3d.org if you have a question about ChefX3D, if you think you've found a bug (developers read the list too, so they'll see your bug question) or if you want to discuss ChefX3D development. After discussing the bug with the developers and it has been found to be a bug then please post it to the ChefX3D Issue Tracker.

Please do not post to chefx3d-cvs@xj3d.org. This list is a code repository list that sends comments on code as it is submitted.

When to post:

Look in the FAQ and maybe review the developers documentation, before asking a question. After looking around for a few minutes and you still don't have an answer then post your question.

Make sure to read through an entire thread before replying to a post. Think carefully about what you have to say, pick a single message to reply to, and then lay out your thoughts.

If you do need to change the Subject header while preserving the thread (perhaps because the thread has wandered into some other topic), do it by making a post under the new subject with the old subject in parenthesis.

Languages and encodings:

Please use ASCII or ISO-8859 text if possible. Don't post HTML mails, RichText mails, or other formats that might be opaque to text-only mailreaders.

At this time we only support English language posts.

Thanks!
